Wero is the European payment solution that lets your customers pay straight from their banking app, by instant transfer, with no card number to enter.
The Wero advantage: an alternative to cards that unlocks high-value baskets otherwise declined because the customer has hit their bank's spending limit.

1. What is Wero?
-
Account-to-account payment: the customer pays by instant transfer from the banking app they already use, with no intermediary and no card details to enter.
-
A European solution: built by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), which brings together the main European banks.
-
An addition to your payment mix: Wero does not replace cards, it complements them and captures high-value transactions that cards decline (weekly spending limit reached).
-
Limits: limits do apply, but they depend on the instant transfer rules of the buyer's bank, and they are higher and more flexible than card limits.
-
Payment type supported: single, immediate payment
-
Click & Collect / Drive: supported. The customer is charged when the order is placed, which is already standard practice for these models.
2. What does the purchase journey look like for your customer?
The customer completes their purchase on your store, then selects Wero at the payment stage and confirms the transaction with the Wero QR code.
Step 1 – Purchase journey on the store
The customer adds the product to their basket, enters their details and address, then chooses a delivery method up to the payment stage.
Step 2 – Selecting Wero and paying by QR code
- At the payment stage, the customer selects "Pay with Wero" and confirms their order.
- A secure dynamic QR code is displayed, showing the amount due and the merchant receiving the payment.
- The customer selects their bank, scans the QR code with their banking app or the Wero app, and confirms the payment with biometrics on their phone.
- The transaction is approved and the order moves to accepted status.
3. Availability and country rollout
Wero is rolling out gradually across Europe. Here is where your customers can already pay with Wero:
| Your customers' country | Availability |
|---|---|
| Germany, Belgium | Available now |
| France | Autumn 2026 |
| Netherlands | 2027 |
Do you sell abroad? If you have Belgian or German customers, you can enable Wero today and offer them this payment method. For your French customers, Wero will appear automatically at launch, with nothing to do on your side.
4. Refunds and dispute handling
How do I issue a refund?
In your PayPlug portal, open the payment concerned, click Refund, enter the amount (full or partial) and confirm. The customer is refunded directly, with no IBAN to handle.
What happens if a customer disputes a payment?
A Wero payment cannot be reversed unilaterally by the customer, which protects you against abusive disputes. If a claim is raised (an item not received, for example), Wero notifies you and gives you time to respond, either by providing proof of delivery or by issuing a refund. If no agreement is reached, the bank decides on the basis of the evidence.
5. Payout of funds
For the buyer, the account is debited immediately and payment confirmation reaches you within seconds, so you can release the order with confidence.
On the merchant side, your PayPlug balance is credited instantly. The actual transfer to your bank account then follows your usual PayPlug payout cycle, just like your card takings.
6. Is my business eligible to offer Wero payments?
Wero is an account-to-account payment solution designed for the vast majority of e-commerce merchants. However, because of European regulations and the Wero network's risk management policies, certain business activities classed as "high risk" are not permitted.
Here are the main categories of activity prohibited on the Wero network:
- Indirect business models: dropshipping (shipping direct from a third-party supplier, with no stock of your own).
- Ticketing and events: sale of tickets for shows, concerts, festivals or sporting events (other than official ticketing run by public institutions).
- Gambling and games of chance: online casinos, sports betting, lotteries and gaming platforms involving money stakes.
- Financial products and crypto-assets: trading platforms, buying and selling cryptocurrencies, currency exchange services (Forex) and e-wallets.
- Adult content: adult entertainment, dating sites or the sale of sexually explicit content.
- Regulated or unauthorised products: sale of tobacco, e-cigarettes, CBD products, weapons, ammunition and uncontrolled pharmaceutical substances.
- Concierge or intermediary services: clairvoyance, astrology and uncertified remote technical support.
Important: even if your business does not explicitly fall into one of the prohibited sectors above, it may still not be eligible for Wero for risk management reasons.
7. How do I get the feature?
Activation steps:
Submit your request: if you have a dedicated Account Manager, contact them directly. Otherwise, submit your activation request via this dedicated page.
Go live: once our teams have enabled the feature on your account, you can switch it on in one click from your CMS back office.
Enabling Wero from your PayPlug module (PrestaShop example):
Step 1 — Enable Wero in the module. In your back office, go to Modules > Module Manager and open the PayPlug module configuration. In the list of payment methods, switch on "Wero payments", then save with "Update settings".
Step 2 — Check how it appears on your store. Once activation is saved, Wero automatically appears as a payment method for your customers when they pay for their order.
